Market Yourself

Would you like to receive the acknowledgement, professional respect, and recognition you deserve? Then it's up to YOU to do something about it. You must make certain you know your value and worth. If you don't know it, who will?

Be aware of the characteristics that make you unique and valuable.

This may be new to you. Many people — especially women — are reluctant to master this step because it doesn't always feel comfortable. If you were always told not to brag, it may be hard to realize your strengths. There is a difference between arrogant bragging and simply knowing what you do well. This can help with positive self-esteem building, too. First, list 10 characteristics that make you professionally unique or remarkable. What about you would encourage people to want to work with you? What are your special talents? What do you truly enjoy doing — so much that it is almost recreational? If you get stuck, ask others to help you. Only ask those people you trust and who think of you in a positive manner. Keep this list in a prominent place and refer to it often. Remind yourself that you are talented.

Be known as a joiner and contributor.

Take some risks, get involved. Become a member of a professional organization that interests you. This is called networking. You not only learn and build new skills, but you make contacts that can be useful later on down the road. Let others know who you are and where they can find you.

Document your accomplishments.

Keep a notebook and write them down as they come. Each day, list your accomplishments — both large and small. At the end of each month, circle one or two of your favorites for that month. This is also useful for end-of-the-year reviews or for updating your resume.

Look professional.

Your appearance should have a tremendous immediate and long-lasting impact on others' perceptions of you and your credibility. A whole new wardrobe is not required, but a few style enhancers here and there can help. This visual image psychologically tells others what they can expect from you and your work.

Consistently do what you said you would - and a little more.

Get things done early. Return your calls with the information you promised today, not tomorrow or next week. Exceeding expectations is an excellent P.R. technique. You will be above the average. It will get people's attention. You only have to be a little better than the others to be the best.

Learn to speak in front of a group.

If you are new at this, video or audio tape yourself before making a group presentation to see how you do or where you need to improve. Practice every chance you get. Take a course in public speaking if you think you need to. You will get attention and be heard if you can communicate well and learn to present your ideas in a logical and interesting way.

Once you have obtained your reputation, hang on to it.

Do not complain or whine. Do not fight back and do not yell back at someone, even if they are yelling at you. Be known as a team player and an agreeable person. Be enjoyable to work with.
