Urgent Message to all CDM, CFPP’s in South Carolina:
As a part of the two year pilot program between SCDHEC and SCDMA to recognize the CDM, CFPP credential as a “qualified food service supervisor” under Section 803 of Regulation 61-16, Standards for Licensing Hospitals and Institutional General Infirmaries, and Section 1405.C of Regulation 61-17, Standards for Licensing Nursing Homes, SCDHEC requested that your Administrators report certain information to the department.
To date, very few facilities have complied with this request. “If the individual serving as your food service supervisor is qualified to hold that position by meeting either #3 [is certified by the Certifying Board for Dietary Managers of the Dietary Managers Association…] or #4 [must have completed a Dietary Managers Association approved course curriculum necessary to take the certification examination to become a certified dietary manager], it is required that you submit to the Department the name of that individual and the date he/she was hired and date no longer employed.” The Department would also like to have a copy of your up-to-date clock hours (you may do this by logging on to the DMA website, and copying your clock hour information and pasting it to a Microsoft Word, WordPad, or other word processing file – don’t forget to save/print the file).
You must reiterate to your Administrator that this information must be sent to SCDHEC, or your facility may face a compliance citation at your next survey. If you have any questions about this, please email Rick Schmitt, CDM, CFPP at chef_rick2000@yahoo.com.

SCDMA Board Notes – The SCDMA Executive Board 2008-2009 has had its first meeting of the year, and would like to thank the South Carolina members for voting us into office. We had a very productive meeting on November 13th at Sysco of Columbia. Topics of discussion included the fiscal budget, the up-coming newsletter, Executive Board meeting and events calendar dates for '08-'09, the Spring 2009 Workshop, and much more. Check the "Events" tab for the dates of Executive Board meetings and locations. We invite members to Audit our meetings. If interested, please contact either Frances Brown or Rick Schmitt at least two days in advance of the meeting.
2009 will be the SCDMA's 35th Anniversary, and we welcome you to help us begin celebrating during “Pride in Foodservice Week” (February 2nd – 6th, 2009) and at the Spring Workshop (March 11th – 13th, 2009). Look for more information in the up-coming editions of "Wren Notes."
The SCDMA Government Affairs Committee or PAC continues to keep your professional interests priority number one. In 2008 we created partnerships with SCDHEC, State Representatives and Senators, and other helpful organizations that can help in vie for our recognition as "Professionals." We will continue to work with these folks in South Carolina, and in Washington, DC, to ensure that your interests and career are secure. We will have a "Day at the Capitol" on March 25th, 2009 to visit our State Senators and Representatives, and explain to them where we can help the betterment of Elder Care in South Carolina. The SCDMA PAC would also like to thank Bob and Nancy Herbolsheimer, our Washington DMA Lobbyists, for their generous contribution of money and time to the SCDMA PAC. I urge each of you to help financially support both the SCDMA and the DMA PACs. It takes money to turn heads and open ears in the Legislature. Your donations will benefit your career and future CDMs. For more information on how you can help the SCDMA PAC, please contact Rick Schmitt, CDM, CFPP, at chef_rick2000@yahoo.com or call (803)553-9561.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas everyone!!
